MILFORD, Mass. – Lt. Col. Scott P. Brown, a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, was elected to the U.S. Senate for Massachusetts in a special election on Jan. 19, 2010. Brown, a 30-year member of the Guard, currently holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General Corps. Brown initially enlisted as an infantryman and later received his commission as an officer.  Brown is currently assigned to the Judge Advocate Corps and serves as the chief of trial defense for the Massachusetts National Guard.  He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service in organizing the National Guard to quickly support homeland security following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.  Brown has deployed to support missions in Kazakhstan and Paraguay.  He has also completed Airborne School and been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.  Brown and his wife, Gail Huff, have two daughters, Ayla and Arianna, both college students. They reside in Wrentham.

MAJ David Henche presents the NGAUS Charles Dick Medal of Merit to State Senator Steve Brewer. This award is designed to recognize the contributions to the National Guard by elected representatives to legislative bodies at the state and national level. NGAMA nominated Senator Brewer for his sponsorship of the Massachusetts Welcome Home Bill as well as his long standing support for the Massachusetts National Guard.

NGAMA Leadership Changes Hands

As one successful year comes to an end another is about to begin. LTC Norm Long completes his year as President of NGAMA and presents the gavel to incoming President MAJ James Hoye.

Letter from the President:

Hello to All,

I have the honor of bring President of the Executive Committee of the National Guard Association of Massachusetts.  I have several goals for this year to ensure  continued success and growth of the Association.  I want to extend our lines of communication with the Enlisted Association, start emailing information to our members, get membership up to over 90% for the next President, assist with the publication a National Guard Almanac, reinvigorate the Committees and have a successful April meeting.

I have started to attend meetings held by the Enlisted Association to see where we have common ground and can work together.  While NGAMA does represent the state to the National Association it membership is made up of officers.  When we combine with the enlisted Association we have a combined voice OVER 6,000 Guardsmen from the Commonwealth.  We hope to have some combined events this year.

We have established several email addresses to help facilitate communications between members and the Executive Committee. We hope to start a regular and measured amount of messages from the Association.  We will keep our messages to basic information about conferences, request for assistance on NGAMA projects, state legislation, and bills that pertain directly with Massachusetts at the National level.

We survive on funding which comes from several areas.  The area that you as an individual can assist with the most is paying your dues.  Also if we can exceed 90% for CY2009 we will get a large reimbursement back from NGAUS.  If you have paid your dues, thank you, if you haven’t please make the effort.  We also receive funding from the SSLI insurance program proceeds. Please visit the website on NGSSLI.com for more detail and information available on the many insurance programs available to you.

There are several committees that need to have personnel involved to ensure we have the best Association that we can.  If you ever wondered where the list of things NGAUS pushes to Congress comes from, it is the Resolutions Committee.  While many items start at the National level, the states can submit resolutions as well.  Resolutions are one of the most important ways we communicate our needs to Congress.  The Membership committee fights to get as many eligible personnel signed on as possible and keep them as a paying member.  This is one of the most visible committees and can easily measure its success.  The  Finance Committee is charged with managing the finances of the association.  We will establish several committees to manage the events during the year.  We will send out request for assistance for these events, if you can give us the time please  join a committee.  The standing Committees all have Points of Contact listed on our webpage.

We will have the NGAMA Conference on the final weekend in April 2010.  Location and format have yet to be determined.  Please look for the Call to Conference for details.

Thank you for your support.

MAJ James P Hoye, President, NGAMA

Nominations for NGAMA Officers and Executive Committee positions are due by February 24th.

Resolutions

Sometimes we get caught up in our daily lives and we forget that we have an organization that is out there fighting for better pay, better equipment and better facilities for us and our soldiers and airmen.  One of the biggest reasons for the existence of NGAUS and NGAMA is to make sure we maintain our current benefits and attain others that can help us perform our duties to the fullest and maintain a good quality of life.  Every day members of NGAUS are working the hill to keep these issues on the front burner.  One of the many purposes of the National Conference held each fall and State Conference held each spring is to ensure that they are focusing on the issues that are most important to the members.  Below please see four links to NGAUS regarding the resolutions process.  The fist link will take you to the SOP for Resolutions and the other links will take you to the actual Resolutions, joint, army and air.  Please take a look and let your Executive Committee and Resolutions Committee know which issues are important to you your family and your troops.
